What it takes to Establish a Medical School

June 2008 Medical school proposal supported by University of California Academic Council. California Postsecondary Education Commission staff concurs with proposal.
June 2008 Acting Chancellor Robert D. Grey and Executive Director of Medical School Planning Phyllis A. Guze, M.D., brief Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on the medical school initiative.
March 2008 UCR Academic Senate votes unanimously to support medical school proposal.
Feb. 2008 UCR Academic Senate unanimously approves medical school curriculum.
Dec. 2007 Chancellor's Community Advisory Board for the School of Medicine established.
Sept. 2007 Dr. Phyllis Guze is named executive director, medical school planning.
Aug. 2007 Business plan work groups are appointed to provide broad input.
June 2007 UCR Academic Senate Health Affairs Committee receives the Proposed Curriculum for the School of Medicine.
June 2007 Kiki Nocella, Ph.D. is named vice provost for health affairs.
Jan. 2007 Laurie Owen, Ph.D. is appointed special assistant to the provost for health affairs.
Nov. 2006 Regents authorize UCR to proceed with plans for medical school.
Aug. 2006 Kiki Nocella, a University of Southern California expert in residency programs, hired as special consultant to UCR.
May 2006 Submitted plans for School of Medicine to UC Office of the President Implementation Committee co-chaired by Provost Rory Hume and Regent Sherry Lansing.
April 2006 Held medical reception in Indian Wells.
March 2006 Search committee established to hire Director of HSRI.
Feb. 2006 Appointed External Advisory Board, chaired by Dr. Haile Debas, former dean of the UC San Francisco School of Medicine.
Feb. 2006 Held community medical reception in Murrieta.
Dec. 2005 Held medical receptions in Riverside and San Bernardino communities.
Nov. 2005 Conducted UCR faculty forum on the Health Sciences Initiative.
Nov. 2005 Announced UCR's intent to submit a proposal for a School of Medicine to meeting of Good Morning Riverside.
Fall 2005 Launched seminar series entitled "Major Issues in Modern Medicine" — two components consisting of a series called "Design of New Medical Schools in the 21st Century" and another called "Frontiers in Biomedical Research".
Spring 2005 Engaged Kurt Salmon Associates to develop a preliminary economic plan and facilities plan for the new School of Medicine.
March 2005 Presented results of study on healthcare workforce needs in California to Regents (Vice President for Health Affairs Michael Drake presenting).
Jan. 2005 Appointed a Health Sciences Planning Council charged with developing a strategic plan to guide the development of the health sciences initiative for the next five years (includes deans of College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Division of Biomedical Sciences, College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences, The Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering, and A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management; vice chancellors of research, advancement, and academic planning and budget; chair of the Academic Senate; and Vice Provost, Academic Personnel).
Jan. 2005 Recruited Robert Grey as Executive Assistant to the Chancellor for Health Affairs.
Sept. 2004 Held meeting of Peck Panel, a group of deans who reviewed UCR's plans to date and provided insights into the establishment of a school of medicine.
Jan. 2004 Received report of Blue Ribbon Panel.
Oct. 2003 Formed Blue Ribbon Panel to explore options for enhancing medical education and biomedical research at UCR.
Sept. 2003 Held Chancellor's Community Forum on Health Care Initiatives, a broad-based gathering of leading physicians, healthcare administrators, elected officials, and community leaders.
Sept. 2003 Conducted Health Sciences Initiative Faculty Forum — more than 70 key UCR faculty representing a cross-section of health science-related disciplines.
