The Board of Visitors for Advising on the Academic Design of the School of Medicine will be responsible for advising the campus on the academic design of the School of Medicine.

Haile Debas, M.D.

Prior to becoming dean, Dr. Debas served as chair of surgery at UCSF for six years. Under his stewardship, the UCSF School of Medicine became a national model for medical education, an achievement for which he was recognized with the 2004 Abraham Flexner Award of the AAMC. One of the few surgeons to be elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine. He currently serves on the United Nations Commission on HIV/AIDS and Governance in Africa and on the Committee on Science, Engineering, and Public Policy of the National Academy of Sciences.
Jordan J. Cohen, M.D.

As president and chief executive officer of the Association of American Medical Colleges, Dr. Cohen leads the AAMC's support and service to the nation's medical schools and teaching hospitals. During his long career in academic medicine, he has served as dean of the medical school and professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and president of the medical staff at University Hospital. He has held a wide variety of leadership positions in almost all aspects of academic medicine, including chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine and of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, as well as president of the Association of Program Directors of Internal Medicine.
David Hayes-Bautista, Ph.D.

Dr. Hayes-Bautista is currently professor of medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the School of Medicine, UCLA. His research focuses on the dynamics and processes of the health of the Latino population using both quantitative data sets and qualitative observations. The Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture combines these research interests with teaching of medical students, residents and practicing providers to manage the care of a Latino patient base effectively, efficiently and economically.
Joseph Martin, M.D., Ph.D.

Prior to returning to the Harvard medical community, Dr. Martin served as chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco for four years. In 1980, he established the National Institutes of Health-sponsored Huntington Disease Center. During his tenure as dean of the UCSF School of Medicine, he established the W.M. Keck Foundation Center for Integrative Neurosciences, the Gladstone Institute for Virology and Immunology, and began planning for a Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the American Association of Physicians and the American Neurological Association.
Neil Parker, M.D.

At UCLA, Dr. Parker oversees medical student admissions, provides guidance for outreach services, assists in negotiation of affiliation agreements and regularly counsels medical students. From 1981-1995, he served as associate program director for the Internal Medicine residency program before which he was an attending physician for residents and fellows in the Department of Medicine. He has twice been honored with the Outstanding Fulltime Faculty Award from the Department of Medicine in addition to receiving the UCLA Medical Staff Service Award. Dr. Parker is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the national honorary medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha.
Deborah Powell, M.D.

Dr. Powell was made director of Diagnostic Pathology at the University of Kentucky in 1976. While teaching at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, she was a three-time winner of the American Medical Students Association's Golden Apple Award, in 1979, 1981, and 1982; in 1988, she was named chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She was named president of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology in 2000. Dr. Powell was elected to the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine, is an elected trustee of the American Board of Pathology, and was a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges Women in Medicine Coordinating Committee from 1992 to 1995. She has also been a member of the National Institutes of Health's Advisory Council, Office of Research on Women's Health, since 1999.
Ralph Snyderman, M.D.

Ralph Snyderman is CEO of Duke University Health System and James B. Duke Professor of Medicine, and oversaw the development of the Duke University Health System. In 1984, he became the Frederic M. Hanes Professor of Medicine and Immunology. Internationally recognized for his contributions in inflammation research, he has received numerous honors and awards, including an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Downstate Medical Center of the State University of New York and a lifetime achievement award from the Arthritis Foundation. He has been recognized as a distinguished alumnus of both Washington College and the Downstate Medical Center of the State University of New York. He is past chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges' Council of Deans and is the past chair of the AAMC. He also is a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine.
